Kiku to Isamu plot

Old grandmother Shige is raising her grandchildren Kiku and Isamu on her own in the Japanese countryside. The mother of the two children was a prostitute and their father a dark-skinned American soldier. Because of their different skin color and frizzy hair, the children are often bullied and treated as strange creatures. Partly due to their rebellious character, it is difficult for Shige to raise the children and, at the end of the rope, Shige gives the children up for adoption.
