Kicks plot

In Kicks, the young supermarket worker and rapper Redouan gets inspiration in the middle of the night. He calls a friend with the plan to immediately use this flow and start rapping. The decision to leave his bed at night has major consequences, when a little later he is fatally struck by a police bullet. Agent Frank firing the shot keeps it to a storm: it was never his intention to kill him. A number of Moroccan Dutch see it as a clear case of racism, while most native Dutch are inclined to believe Frank. On the dividing line between black and white are two young Moroccan Dutchmen: Redouan's brother Said (Mimoun Oaissa), one who lives with a Dutch girl (Chantal Janzen) and is a popular kickboxer for white and black, and Aaliyah (Maryam Hassouni), a police officer in training. and witnessed the shooting. They are torn by the dilemmas they face. Both threaten to become a plaything for the highly flared emotions of both Moroccan and native Dutch people.

I don't know what to make of it. It was messy, I thought the acting was too disturbing, the storylines didn't appeal to me at all and the humor... well, I didn't think what was supposed to be funny was funny. It dragged on too, there was no momentum. Each story in itself seemed to last for hours and each time I got the feeling that more could have been done with it. Some twists in the story, however, hit the ground running and I wondered what the added value was.

It was nice to see Fernhout in a movie, I mainly know him from 'Ranking with the Stars' and I found him sympathetic there, but that story of his was of course really nothing. I could hardly take it seriously. Bit unnecessary in a film that wants to get a message out.

2.0*, that's all I can make of it.

A good crime/drama film...

Great story...

A true story...

Great acting...

Only well-known actor Eelco Smits (Blood relatives) plays little...

Great background sound/music (Dolby Digital)...

Great HD quality...

Not bad for a Dutch film...
