The 19th century. For generations, the Brand farming family has worked a piece of land as tenant of the baron, who owns almost all the land of the village. The baron himself comes from a farming family, who was knighted and made rich through corruption. He is the absolute ruler, no one dares to contradict him. He takes and does what he wants and shows excessive behavior. At the same time, he is the epitome of petty bourgeoisie. John, the horse servant, wants to marry Mariken Brand and asks the baron for a piece of land where he can build his own existence. The baron reacts harshly. Not only does he refuse to give him the land, but John will no longer be able to continue on his current lease.
