Women may have the right to vote in post-World War II Italy, but for single mother Marta, traditional patriarchal mores still apply in her Calabrian village. Her parents have the 'solution' to her situation: marry the old, unattractive farmer and widower Gino as soon as possible. Then Marta meets Lorenzo, the homosexual assistant to the local priest, who offers her the prospect of a different life.
