Mary Evans is a new schoolteacher who arrives in the town of Ainsley. There is a strike in the dairy industry in Ainsley, which is heating up the spirits of the local dairy farmers. The cynical boy Shockey Carter is one of Mary's new students. Shockey is a boy with a short fuse. When Mary takes an interest in him, she learns that he lives with his father, Captain Fred Carter. Fred turns out to be a traumatized war veteran.
