The secret love between the Ulan officer Lothar von Pütz and the beautiful Roswitha von Krakow has developed into a real family quarrel. In vain the old but lively Baron Hanke tries to arrange a reconciliation attempt. Lothar's last hope of overcoming his financial difficulties is a victory in the army race at Karlshorst. After a dramatic battle, he is the first to reach the finish. But because of the presence of her parents, Roswitha, with whom he is present here, did not dare to bet on his horse. The disappointment causes a serious rift between the young couple and Roswitha accepts Baron Hanke's proposal at her father's insistence. The engagement is celebrated at the Bärenhof.
