His Mother's Boy plot
Matthew Denton's father was a New England oil magnate. After his death, Matthew was raised by his mother. She spoiled him and forbade him from hanging out with the other boys in town. When the company's shareholders received notice that no dividends were being paid, they turned their anger on Matthew's mother. He came to her defense and announced that he would be working in the oil industry in Texas.
