The elderly Peter B. Kayne has transferred his fortune to his 55-year-old son Rufus, the director of an administrative office. Meanwhile, his three daughters Diane, Claudia, and Sheila continue their frivolous lifestyle. Rufus meets the choir girl Mercedes and loses the family fortune through a risky investment. Diane has a change of heart and wants to prevent her younger sister Sheila from making the same mistakes as herself. Moreover, she marries the young lawyer Lloyd Maitland. Rufus suffers a nervous breakdown when the family assets are auctioned off.
