In the year 1915 Helene Schjerfbeck is a forgotten name in the art world. She lives with her elderly mother in the countryside where she still practices the painting profession. Her life is turned upside down when an art dealer discovers her many works of art and wants to display them, for the first time in years. When Helene meets aspiring painter Einar Reuter, she also meets the love of her life.
