England, 1890. The tyrannical and self-centered James Brodie is a milliner who cares deeply about escaping his poverty-stricken existence. James may improve socially, but life for those closest to him doesn't get any better. His wife and daughter Marie have a miserable life due to James' ambitions and extramarital affair. After his wife commits suicide, James's successful millinery is in danger of succumbing to competition from his former employee's company. The problems are piling up for James: despite his social success, it seems increasingly that he cannot get rid of his poverty-stricken past.
