The love that blossomed in Rome between doctors Najla and Sherko has no right to exist in Iraq in the late 1980s: Najla comes from an influential family loyal to Saddam Hussein, Sherko is of Kurdish descent. He has returned to Iraq without telling her to help the victims of Saddam's chemical attacks on Kurdish villages. By traveling after him, Najla inadvertently puts him in danger. She condemns the aggression of her own social class and takes sides with the victims – a choice that ultimately drives her to an extreme decision.
