In the early 1800s, Elizabeth "Betsy" Patterson (Dolores Costello), a Baltimore girl, falls in love with her French teacher, Jérôme (Conrad Nagel). This one is handsome and smart, seemingly shabby, but well-bred and handy with a rapier. What Elizabeth does not know is that Jérôme is not a teacher, but a nobleman and the brother of Napoleon Bonaparte.
