The title already reveals a lot. The film is about two teenage girls, Coley and Sonya, who like each other. Nice and simple, then. Not entirely, because a crush that isn't accompanied by problems and conflicts naturally doesn't make for a very long film. And so there are difficulties and obstacles that must be overcome. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Haylee Kiyoko, who also worked on the script and took on the directing duties as well. The novel, and therefore the film, describes Kiyoko's own experiences.

Girls Like Girls is not a bad film. My fear that the theme of homophobia would be dredged up again did not materialize. The problems and conflicts stem from the characters themselves. The girls are not yet truly outspoken about their lesbian feelings. One reacts somewhat more intensely to this than the other, and that behavior leads to some minor issues and conflicts. It is not all very serious. Rather, it is touching. Especially because, as a viewer, you get a very strong feeling that everything turns out fine in the end.

That does not alter the fact that a number of scenes evoke emotion. In my case, these were the scenes where the line between friendship and love cannot be clearly drawn. The insecurity of both girls is palpable at those moments and is endearing. The acting there is excellent.

The events in the film are not all equally interesting, but they do exude authenticity. And in my opinion, authenticity is also an important strength of the film. Sometimes the story threatens to veer too much into the sentimental side, but then the authentic factor intervenes, always ensuring just in time that the events cannot be excessively characterized as sweet, soft, and meaningless. Although they might well be.
