Joe Dunham, Lisette, Wellington, Mary Jones and Tom Burke are five employees of a military ammunition depot in the United States, who are driven to work every day by old driver Jim Benson. These employees do not speak to each other during the journey. Until now, Benson has told his wife fantasy stories about his five passengers, but now she wants to invite them to a party. That is why Benson breaks the silence this time by asking them what they did before World War II and now during World War II. The five passengers each tell their different life stories in flashbacks.
