Empire of Dirt plot
Lena Mahikan, a former model addict, is now a single mother struggling to make ends meet in Toronto. As her last name suggests - meaning wolf in Cree - her senses smell danger which she instinctively avoids. So when her recalcitrant and headstrong 13-year-old daughter Peeka overdoses, attracting the attention of Child Protective Services, she flees with her to her hometown in rural Ontario. There, she reunites with her estranged mother Minnie, forcing her to reconsider her past. A past she desperately tries to ignore.
