Die Mörder Sind unter Uns plot

Susanne Wallner returns to her old apartment in Berlin just after the end of World War II. There she finds its current resident: the ever-drunk and traumatized Dr. Hans Mertens. Susanne politely asks him if he wants to look for a home of his own as soon as possible; until then he can stay. In the following period, a mutual sympathy and eventually even love develops between the two housemates. Hans is doing better and better, until one day Susanne finds a letter from Captain Ferdinand Brückner, which Hans should deliver to his wife after his death. When he later hears from Susanne that Brückner is still alive, something snaps in Hans and it slowly becomes clear why he is so traumatized.

Oppressive film about life in Berlin shortly after the capitulation. The images of the city shot to pieces are chilling. This gradually applies equally to the story, in which a former German army doctor comes face to face with the personification of a life-size trauma from the war. The storyline about his relationship with a young woman does not really come into its own, but that is of less importance and therefore cannot prevent me from finding this an impressive film, also considering the time and the circumstances under which it was made. All the more so because Wolfgang Staudte's message about war criminals, who were able to get back to work successfully almost immediately after the war, cannot be misunderstood.

The first German war film after WWII? Apparently the Allies were not very pleased with this film (was it the images of Berlin bombed to pieces and/or the misery of the civilian population?) which deals with post-war traumas and certainly with the fact that criminals in the event were not affected by it afterwards and even went through life complacently as valued citizens.

Nice, realistic film. Long time since I saw "der Knef" at work.

In August 1945, concentration camp survivor Susanne Wallner [Hildegard Knef] returns to her badly damaged apartment in a largely bombed-out Berlin to discover that it has been taken over by Hans Mertens [Wilhelm Borchert], an embittered doctor. Despite the awkward introduction and the strange circumstances, Hans is allowed to share the apartment with Susanne until an alternative presents itself. Piece by piece we discover what Hans experienced during the Second World War and the role of the remarkably cheerful and optimistic businessman Ferdinand Breuckner [Arno Paulsen]. Remarkable German war drama, partly filmed on location with a visual style that many a Hollywood director could learn a thing or two from. Visually stunning, intellectually stimulating war drama with a denouement clearly inspired by All Quiet On The Western Front. Don't miss this!
