Die Besten Jahre plot

Ernst Machner returns from the war in 1945. He is in his mid-twenties, but has no job, no education, let alone a long education. He actually wants to work as a weaver, but he is convinced to work as a teacher. After the war, he was taken in and cared for by the single Hilde Tanner, and a romantic relationship developed between the two. When Machner takes his position in a village school, he is separated from Hilde. This touches the woman deeply, but the progress the young students are making is amazing.
