Der Kreidekreis plot

The poor woman Tschang sells herself and her daughter Haitang as a concubine to Mandarin Ma. In his teahouse, the domineering, unscrupulous Yue-Pei rules. When Haitang gives birth to a child, Yue-Pei poisons her husband and accuses the girl of murder. She then says that the child is her own in order to qualify for the inheritance. The case eventually comes to the emperor, who must pass judgment.
