Nine-year-old Mathilde's parents are divorced. She lives alone with her mother, a fragile woman who is on the verge of madness and it is always uncertain in which state Mathilde will see her again. Mathilde does everything she can to protect her mother and to prevent them from being separated from each other. One day Mathilde gets a talking owl, which becomes her friend and guide.
