Deep in the Valley plot
In Yanaka, romance is mixed with an ancient pagoda, a classic literary work by Rohan Koda. Kaori, a young woman working for a non-profit organization finds out that there used to be a five-storey pagoda in the center of the Yanaka cemetery. It burned down in 1957, and rumor has it that someone has an 8mm film of the fire. Kaori visits Buddhist monks, the cemetery caretaker, a local historian, and traditional artisans in her quest for the film. She falls in love with Hisaki, a local street rat, and together they discover the mysteries of the lost pagoda. In between we follow the story of Jubei, which takes place in the Edo period (18th century). Jubei, a young, unknown carpenter, strives to build a five-storey Pagoda, despite the opposition of his boss, his colleagues and his wife.
