De Papegaai plot

Johan van Dam (Peter Tuinman), his wife Vera and his children Karin and Teun arrive in the country of Tyros, which has granted them political asylum. In the Netherlands it appears that a military regime has come to power. The dissident printer Johan initially managed to escape arrest by going into hiding, but after a while he was discovered and arrested. He is subject to torture. His wife and children are in trouble due to lack of money. Due to international pressure, a number of political prisoners, including Johan, are allowed to leave the country. In Tyros, the family is housed in a village in the countryside. Initially, the adjustment problems mainly arise from the confrontation with the completely different culture. But after some years, when the family has settled somewhat, the problems arise from the situation at home. Johan is unemployed and feels like a useless exile. With comrades, however, he tries to maintain the illusion of being able to support the resistance in the Netherlands from abroad.
