The story is about the Turkish-Dutch Meral, who lives with her two daughters in Almere and is a victim of the benefits affair. When social detective Ron infiltrates her life, she is forced to make increasingly radical choices to keep her family out of the clutches of the authorities and not lose everything.

Wow, what an interesting discussion above. I can understand the opinion of both Graaf Machine and mrklm, but I still thought the film was very successful. Initially, I expected a courtroom drama, but The Hunt for Meral Ö is not about that stage at all. However, the enormous amount of injustice that comes her way gets under my skin. She is trapped like a rat and the frustration is incredibly palpable while watching, knowing that the Dutch State has really let this happen to countless families.

I am not yet 100% on board with the facts of that benefits affair. So it came down to an overly institutionalized approach by the government to no longer grant them, which meant that many people who were entitled to them did not receive them. Add to that the controversial hard intimidating approach.
I am sometimes surprised by the very stigmatizing hard control function that I have already seen pass by in the care via films. Ken Loach, for example, has a knack for showing the harrowing situations in the hard British system where people are really labeled as guilty. And not just an outcast, but stereotypical for a whole group of people.
I am a care provider myself, also one who, in addition to supporting, must also sanction, but the latter is done with the necessary respect. I can hardly estimate the impact in the Netherlands via this one film. Purely cinematically average, but solid, ditto with the acting.
