In Santa Monica, California, aging pawn shop owner Lizzie Griggs is found beaten to death in her store. Outside in the crowd of curious onlookers, law student Bob Cole collapses upon the arrival of police led by Lieutenant Porter and Sergeant Samuels. He is taken home by his best friend and classmate Rafe, and recovers quickly. After Rafe leaves, Bob goes to the beach and buries a bag containing a crowbar, gloves and a jar filled with money. What does he have to hide?
