"THE MOVING TALE OF TWO LOVABLE SOULS!"
When her mother dies, Winnie Brady, who is in a wheelchair, is taken in by shopkeeper and neighbor Joe Carmine. He convinces Pastor Ryan to adopt her. Joe and Winnie live with Tommy Devlin, his grandmother and a dog named Muriel. Joe wants to sell his shop to pay for an operation on Winnie's legs, which puts him out of business. He then tries to earn a meager living by selling fruit and vegetables on the street. Winnie is sent to an orphanage. Joe is so distraught with grief that he slowly begins to languish.
