Srubov is a member of CHEKA, the secret police unit that Lenin created after the Bolshevik Revolution. They arrest, interrogate and kill. In the basement of an office building, people are murdered in groups of five, loaded onto wagons and taken away. Srubov is an apparently distant and cold man. Hated by his closest friends and family. Yet something is troubling him.
