Category 6: Day of Destruction plot

Three tornadoes leave a trail of destruction through Las Vegas. Cyclones ravage the Florida coast. The northeast of the US is suffering an unparalleled heat wave. Storms rage through the south. Lightning flashes light up the sky and fires break out everywhere. Amy Harkin is an aspiring anchorwoman from Chicago hoping for her big break. She is terrified of these natural disasters, and even more so of the inevitable consequences: power outages across the country and less and less capacity to restore things. Overloading the remaining power grid could paralyze the entire country. The entire population would then be left in the dark, cut off from the rest of the world and exposed to the most terrible dangers.

Without the computer part, this would have been a good disaster movie. It's a lot like Day after tomorrow. The elements of nature are more believable here. In DAT, disasters come pretty quickly overnight. Here it comes a little slower with not so much a new ice age, but more believable several storms that are getting more intense due to global warming. Acting performances are not always good, but that will have to do with the less budget to attract better names. The special effects can be right next to those of DAT. Especially when you look at the price tag...

The terribly bad special effects and the way too long running time bring the film down. A few actors try to make something of it, but these efforts are unfortunately insignificant. The characters are of such an interesting caliber that I didn't care at all whether or not they made it to the end of the film. In addition, the film is also numerous in credibility and the ending is rushed way too quickly. I would have liked to take the film seriously, but nowhere did the film feel believable. With a better elaboration, the level of a film such as 2012 could well have been achieved.

1*
