Thérèse Bourgoine is a French woman who volunteers in humanitarian work on the Philippine island of Palawan. While transporting supplies to their base in Puerto Princesa, the capital of Palawan, they and another volunteer, Filipino Soledad Carpio, are kidnapped by a group of Muslim extremists. Better known as the Abu Sayyaf Group, they fight for the independence of the Muslims on the nearby island of Mindanao.
