By Way of the Stars plot

Prussia, around 1865. The world of thirteen-year-old Lukas Beinmann collapses when his mother Maria dies in childbirth. His gruff grandfather now demands that Lukas go back to Canada with him. Luke then flees from the house and is immediately haunted by misery. His father Karl is falsely accused and ends up behind bars. A friendship develops between Lukas and Ursula. His father escapes from prison and flees to America. Lukas wants to go after him and reaches America as a blind passenger.
