Buladó plot

Kenza (11) lives with her father Ouira, her grandfather Weljo and stray dog Cajun in a house on a junkyard in the countryside of Curaçao. The two men in her life are polar opposites: her father is a police officer and a rational man, while her grandfather prefers to enter the spiritual world from the history of the islands. Kenza balances between these two worlds, until grief over the loss of loved ones opens her eyes and she opens up to her grandfather's mystical, comforting traditions. In this she must learn to find her own way.

The winner of the Golden Calf for Dutch film contains beautiful images and a suitably atmospheric score. Director and co-writer Eché Janga, however, fails to get any emotion out of his young leading lady Tiara Richards. Richards plays the role of 11-year-old Kenza, whose rebelliousness at home and at school is related to the death of her mother in 2010. She feels misunderstood by her father Ouira [Everon Jackson Hooi] and seeks support from her grandfather Weljo [Felix de Rooy] and his mystical stories.

It's a rather thin story for its running time and Janga uses that time a lot to hammer the intended emotions into the audience. The mystical elements do provide some interesting moments but Janga falls back on clichés too often and Richards' unconvincing acting doesn't make it easy to sympathize with her.

Not my kind of film. A typical Dutch arthouse film with many meaningful silent images. At least, that's how it should be, but as a viewer I don't feel that anywhere. It's rather annoying and meaningless, also because the content only manages to captivate me moderately. Beautiful endearing role by Everon Jackson Hooi, but I didn't care for De Rooy's performance. There are some beautiful pictures, but then I prefer to look at photos. A bit like I had with another film by this director, although that film was much worse. 1.5*.

I thought it was a decent film. A children's film too, which makes it all quite simple. Central to it is the young Kenza who is in her full development. She is not feeling well, has no friends and has a bad relationship with her father. Her father does not involve her in the mourning of her deceased mother. He is sullen and distant, even though he worries a lot about her. He just can't put it into words.

There she finds more connection with her grandfather who believes in the spirituality of the ancestors. He is caught between traditional culture and the new world of capitalism and tourism.

The image that is presented of the Antilles is bleak with poorly maintained graves, a school in disrepair, with rubbish here and there. No places at least where the cruise ship will dock.
