Bon Voyage plot

Frederic is an escaped convict who tries to reach Bordeaux in WWII to speak to Vivian, an actress. She was responsible for his incarceration. He meets Camille, a nuclear physics student. Rappenau has directed only eight films in a career spanning nearly 60 years; just to tell you that he is not the most prolific French director. But when you see his films you see a perfectionist sense of aesthetics and detail. His films have a high spectacle value and almost feel like American films, with a lot of panache. Only his earliest films were disappointing.

Bon Voyage is a fairly busy film, which starts as a kind of film noir with a well-known film actress Vivianne as the femme fatale (Adjani) who involves her childhood friend Frédéric. Then it turns towards a resistance film when the Germans invade France and the main characters all flee and end up in Bordeaux. Frédéric then gradually ends up in a plan to get a nuclear physicist to England, and the film then becomes somewhat chaotic due to the multitude of characters that are followed: Vivianne's political lover (Depardieu), the murdered man's cousin, a journalist. who is in fact a German spy, the professor and his entourage....

Frédéric's feelings shift through all kinds of twists and turns from his selfish childhood love to a resistance fighter, and that is an important motif that often takes "Bon Voyage" on the romantic side. A good, easy-to-watch film. But film noir, resistance drama, romance and adventure... it's quite a lot for one film.
