Bleeke Bet plot
Place of action is the Amsterdam Jordaan. Bet, who owns a greengrocer's shop and conducts dubious margarine trade with slum landlord Van Santen, wants to link her daughter Jans to Hannes, Van Santen's son. However, Jans is engaged to Ko, a sailor. Suddenly, Bet reads in the newspaper that Ko's ship has sunk on a voyage. However, Ko appears to have survived the disaster. Together with Van Santen, Bet decides not to give the telegram, in which Ko gives a sign of life, to Jans. Jans finally gives in to her mother's wishes...
