Anton Chekhov's The Duel plot
A couple flees Moscow and goes to live in the Caucasus, where it is always hot and humid. Laevsky and Nadyezhda are lovers who fled the latter's husband to find their own house, but for the time being they rent rooms. Laevsky drinks, gambles and performs some much-needed jobs for his job as a civil servant. He spends most of his time devising a plan to escape Nadyezhda, as his love has turned to hatred. Nadyezhda, in turn, has become bored and has affairs here and there.
