Five men from an aircraft squadron are the center of attention with their conflicts: Commander Milan has reached the age limit for pilots and must accept that he will be forced to stop flying. Lieutenant Lenz lost control of his machine in a flight and was seriously injured in his rescue, leaving him paralyzed in the worst case. He doesn't want his girlfriend Anka to commit to him, but she loves him too much for that. The young Kullas takes Lenz's place in the squadron. His predecessor's accident gives him some anxiety, yet he tries to figure out what "courage" means to him. First Lieutenant Herzog loves the teacher Sigrid. She returns his love, but it is difficult for her to choose a 'hero' who risks his life. After all, her husband was killed two years earlier when he tried to defuse a bomb. Herzog certainly does not want to give up his job. And the fifth, Captain Wendland, is party secretary. He takes his defense mission as seriously as caring for his comrades.
