Almost a Woman plot

A young woman, Esmeralda Santiago, and her family move from a poor neighborhood in Puerto Rico to the big city of New York. The transition has been difficult because of the many changes she and her family are going through. Esmeralda takes on the duties of daughter, student and translator for the family. She excels in everything she does and dreams of becoming a great actress and writer. However, she faces many obstacles to fulfill these dreams.
