A Trick of Fate plot
After her father dies and a banker, to whom he owes $5,000, insults the family honor, dance teacher Mary Lee, the last in a long line of Southern aristocrats, goes to New York with the promise of repaying the debt. In Paris, Raoul Garson, an American theater manager, signs dance sensation Anna Gerard, who resembles Mary, to appear on Broadway against the wishes of her Apache lover, Pierre La Rouge. When Anna, who performs as "Zura," quits, Garson discovers Mary wandering the streets and gives her $5,000 to perform as Zura, promising her secrecy. After La Rouge arrives and murders Anna, Garson makes it appear as if Mary has died.
