A Mother's Ordeal plot

A young lawyer, Robert Mason, is forced to marry Mary Howard after impregnating her. But when he soon abandons her and is reportedly killed in a train accident, she leaves her baby daughter with her aunt and then attempts suicide by wading into a pond. Mary is rescued by Desmond, a young thief, who takes care of her and marries her, but she soon discovers he is a thief when she is arrested for complicity in his crimes.
