A Man and the Woman plot

Heiress Agnes Van Suyden discovers that Allen Crawford, the father of her unborn child, is already married and conveniently proposes marriage to struggling lawyer James Duncan, offering him wealth and social standing in exchange for giving her child his name. James learns to love his new wife and child, even though Agnes doesn't seem to reciprocate. When Allen returns from Europe after his wife's death, the Duncans' maid, Miss Perrier, arranges a meeting between Agnes and her ex-lover, hoping to profit from the latter.
