A Lady of Quality plot
The dissolute Sir Jeoffrey, whose contempt for the opposite sex extends even to his own daughters, receives news of the arrival of another female child in the family. The mother dies shortly afterward, and the child, Clorinda, is raised without a guiding hand among the servants. True to his promise to ignore his offspring, Sir Jeoffrey only seeks contact with Clorinda in her sixth year, when he sees her playing with his powder horn in the great hall of his castle, Wildair. The child, who has inherited her father's courage and willpower, shows no fear.
