A House Is Not a Home plot
"No One Knew Her Business Better Than Polly Adler!"
This drama tells the true story of Polly Adler (Shelley Winters), one of Broadway's most successful brothel owners in the 1920s. When Polly's uncle, with whom she lives, learns that Polly was seduced and raped by the foreman at work, he blames her and puts her on the street. She moves into an apartment owned by a mobster. It is he who encourages her in her "service" position when he offers her money to bring her friends to a gangster party. She soon built up her own clientele. As her business begins to flourish, she chooses increasingly beautiful locations. Her house becomes a haven for dubious politicians, mobsters and businessmen. Polly herself has a passionate romance with a young songwriter and advances his career. However, he is unaware of her calling. She therefore breaks up with him to uphold his reputation.
