In The Land, Ivars Seleckis captures the annual cycle of a Latvian rural community in attentive, observational images. Fifty years earlier, he directed The Corn-Bins (1973) in the same region, about the major shift in Latvian agriculture. The increase in scale already struck here under Stalin – after all, individuals were difficult to control. The huge farms heralded the decline of traditional agriculture. Meanwhile, more and more people have returned to the countryside. Through five families, Seleckis shows the diversity of the countryside in modern Latvia, supported by his own voice-over full of reflections on the nature of documentary making.
