Yoole (Le Sacrifice) plot
In April 2006, a small boat is discovered drifting aimlessly off the east coast of Barbados. Local fishermen leave the boat for weeks, assuming it has something to do with drug smuggling. In the end, the boat turns out to contain the bodies of eleven Senegalese who set out for Europe four months earlier. In Senegal it is common for young people to sail into the Atlantic Ocean in a rickety vessel, in search of money and happiness. Director Moussa Sene Absa, himself a Senegalese and in Barbados when the boat was discovered there, traces the stories of the young men who risk the crossing in his homeland. Amid slums and other shabby buildings in the ghetto, young and old talk about poverty, hunger, politics, corruption, Western Union and the paradise West.
