This documentary is a philosophical journey through the millennia and the continents: from the pioneering experiment of self-government in ancient Athens to capitalism in medieval Italy; from modern-day Greece struggling with a financial collapse and a growing refugee crisis to the United States with its history of racism and the widening gap between the rich and poor. Through interviews with theorists, surgeons, activists, factory workers, refugees and former prime ministers, the film links the past to the present, the emotional to the intellectual and the personal to the political to provoke and inspire. If we want to live in democracy, we must first ask ourselves what the word actually means.
