Wajir: Honger naar Verandering plot

The famine in Wajir, in northeastern Kenya, on the border with Somalia, has once again sparked debate about the usefulness of emergency aid. In the region, which is neglected by the central government, most people live as shepherds. But their animals are dying from the drought and lack of food. So they migrate to villages or Wajir town. During the last great drought, twenty years ago, the different clans fought for the scarce water. Thanks to the women who forced their men to surrender their weapons, that ended. The women ensured a permanent consultation structure between the clans to prevent new conflicts. The same women are now trying to get the children to school and make society less vulnerable to the drought. Despite a weak and corrupt government, this is how structural projects get off the ground in Wajir, often in combination with emergency aid.
