Anyone familiar with Ulrich Seidl's documentaries must have wondered how the Austrian persuades people to expose themselves in front of the camera in this way – literally sometimes, but Seidl always manages to tempt them to give up their deepest desires and obsessions. We just don't see how he does this in Constantin Wulff's documentary about the filmmaker – that remains the blacksmith's secret. But from the short conversations with Seidl himself, his actors and his wife and fellow screenwriter Veronika Franz it becomes clear where his fascinations lie: in the darkness behind the neat facade that most of us have erected. In addition to those sparse interviews, Wulff mainly calmly looks at how Seidl behaves on set, and that is sometimes not very subtle. We see the filmmaker at work shooting Im Keller, his new documentary about what people are up to in those huge cellars under their tidy Austrian houses, and during rehearsals for the play Böse Buben / Fiese Männer.
