Trabant, de Kunststof Kameraad plot

In 1991 the Trabant factory in Zwickau, in the former East Germany was closed. Of the 13,000 people who worked there, the majority ended up on the street. The Trabant was one of the most striking symbols of the 'Ossie culture'. Cheaply produced, stripped of any luxury, accessible to everyone, a proud export product to other countries of the Eastern Bloc. Immediately after the Wende in 1989, the 'Trabi' fell into discord. Cars from the West - second-hand or not - quickly pushed the Trabant off the East German roads. Production had to be stopped shortly afterwards. In this documentary, program maker Wim Schepens visits ex-employees of the factory. Many of them are still unemployed, a small group of privileged people was able to work for competitor Volkswagen, which established a production line in Zwickau after the wall fell.
