Towards the Last Shore plot
The Italian island of Lampedusa is the symbol of the first accessible European mainland in relation to the African continent. But it is also the symbol of the first outpost of "the European fortified castle". Hundreds of desperate people wash ashore every day on the coast of Lampedusa, risking their lives on overcrowded rafts who want to reach Europe at all costs. At the same time, Lampedusa is also a place where a thousand inhabitants live, together with the newcomers who are in transit. It is therefore a place where the complex situation far exceeds the shores of the island. Fabrizio Basano chose not to make a political analysis with this documentary, but to focus primarily on direct testimonies. He meets an artist who works with objects washed ashore from the sea, a Moroccan immigrant, residents who explain the evolution of the situation since the 1990s, but also an old Italian who settled in Tunisia and who has a more distant historical view of the whole condition.
