Tiexi Qu plot
In the three parts Rust, Remnants and Rails, Chinese director Wang Bing charts the economic decline of one of the most densely populated industrial areas in northeast China. The film is one long journey along the railway that cuts through the area. It becomes clear how this area, once the heart of the planned economy with a labour-intensive industry of blast furnaces and steel companies, is not prepared for the future with the necessary modernizations. Sandwiched between the communist legacy and the more capitalist future, economic reforms and bankruptcies subsequently lead to demolition and vacancy. An army of workers is left desolate.
