They Call It Myanmar: Lifting the Curtain plot

A rare look behind the scenes of the second most isolated country in the world: Burma - or Myanmar, as the military junta renamed the country in 1989. Over a period of two years, writer and filmmaker Robert H. Lieberman made clandestine shots of the everyday lives of ordinary citizens, a life dominated by food scarcity, power outages and a lack of medical care and education. In this land of countless golden pagodas, known not so long ago as the 'rice bowl of Asia', there is abject poverty, making child labor and trafficking rife, for example. In a special interview, opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi talks about Burma's recent history and the years of house arrest she had to serve as a result of her political activities. A portrait of a country in which beauty and decay, fear and courage stand side by side.
