The United States of America plot

The attentive images, sometimes with subtle humor, merge into an alternative portrait of the United States of today, without the big stories that the country usually prides itself on. Often they are places on the verge of decay – a world where people took what they needed and now leave only traces of it. But nothing is what you think you see. Benning shows the United States as we think it looks.

James Benning uses 50 static shots of just under two minutes each, one for each US state and edited alphabetically by name, in this study of the state of the country where the soundtrack is more important than the visuals. More photography (or visual poetry) than cinema, and not every segment is equally interesting, but it is intellectually stimulating and offers plenty of opportunity for reflection.
