The Finns are proud of it, but for outsiders or beginners the combination of heat, wood, fire, strange aromas and naked bodies is often a somewhat bizarre and uncomfortable experience. This film makes it clear once and for all that a sauna is not a seedy sex cage or a place for self-torture, but a place with an age-old tradition and fixed rituals for cleansing, health and togetherness. The sauna is an essential part of the Finnish identity. Finland has five million inhabitants and three million saunas. They have always been of crucial importance in Finnish culture, in family, social and even political life, in times of peace and war.
